In keeping with the popularity of talent search shows like "American Idol" and "Fame," the 2003 Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon is looking for new talent to present on its legendary Labor Day weekend broadcast.

Singers, dancers, comedians, bands and novelty acts are among the performers MDA is seeking in its "Stars Across America" talent search. Those selected will appear live on the Telethon on Monday, Sept. 1, from Hollywood, New York, Chicago and other remote locations. The show draws some 60 million viewers, plus millions more on the Internet.

"Over the years, our Telethon has showcased many up-and-coming performers, and I'm thrilled that shows like ‘American Idol,' ‘Fame,' ‘Star Search' and ‘Nashville Star' are helping keep that tradition alive," said Telethon star and MDA National Chairman Jerry Lewis. "I'm very excited that this year's Telethon will give some of the stars of tomorrow a great opportunity to be seen by millions, while helping ‘my kids.'"

MDA's 38th annual Telethon will be broadcast live beginning at 9 p.m. EDT on Aug. 31.

To audition, send a VHS-format videotape of your performance (no more than 4 minutes) to: Jerry Lewis MDA Talent Search 2003, 7800 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036. Tapes must be received by July 22.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and able to provide their own music (live or pre-recorded) both for rehearsal and during the show itself.

Funds raised by the Telethon help support services and research for people affected by more than 40 neuromuscular diseases.
