After conducting a six-month study of over 800,000 nonprofit organizations in the United States, Worth Magazine has named Mercy Corps one of "America's 100 Best Charities." In a cover article in its December issue, Worth Magazine lists the top charities in five categories: environment, health, human services, education and relief and development.

Mercy Corps is one of 21 organizations earning distinction in relief and development. In introducing this category, Reshma Memon Yaqub writes:

"Wars, natural disasters, and the basic structural needs of nations present tremendous challenges for aid organizations. The ones listed below share characteristics crucial in this field: They work effectively with other groups on the scene, sharing information and resources. They focus tightly on their missions and don't venture into areas in which they lack expertise. And they involve local leaders in program design and implementation, which helps ensure lasting results after they move on."

The charities selected were chosen based on a variety of criteria including financial efficiency and program scope.
