Mercy Corps Responds to American TragedyMercy Corps International Program Formed to Help Children in Overlooked Communities in Wake of Attack on US In response to the tragic events in New York City, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania on September 11, Mercy Corps has launched an intensive effort to aid families in those communities that might otherwise be overlooked by relief efforts. Specifically, Mercy Corps is focusing on the needs of refugee and immigrant children through the following programs: Comfort for Kids Mercy Corps and its partner agency, The Dougy Center, have sent booklets to educators and parents in New York with information on how to help kids cope with fear, anger and grief. Mercy Corps has produced a special training video to teach parents and child care providers about trauma counseling. Mercy Corps is sending Comfort Kits, which include art supplies, flashlights, and stuffed animals and other items that experts say help kids feel safe and express themselves, to children in refugee, immigrant and low-income communities. Emergency expert Jim White, a veteran of Mercy Corps relief efforts in Kosovo and Chechnya, has been dispatched to New York to provide further needs assessment. Scholarship Funds Mercy Corps is collecting funds for the Families of Freedom Fund with all scholarship money going to refugee and immigrant families affected by the crisis. Internet Outreach Mercy Corps has revamped its website to serve as a resource for those looking to help and those in need of help, and sharing of messages of solidarity, tolerance and understanding between people all over the world. All proceeds from clicks on Mercy Corps' partner,The Hunger Site, until September 30 will be used to ensure that New York City foodbanks are sufficiently stocked in the wake of the crisis.
