Mercy Corps joins the world community in mourning the loss of life in the terrorist acts perpetrated yesterday, while honoring the heroism of so many who have aided and continue to aid those who are suffering. This watershed event in the life of America has reduced the nation's sense of inviolability to dust, and reminded us of our common humanity with those who suffer around the world.

Mercy Corps will work with local organizations on the ground in New York and Washington, DC to provide assistance to survivors, responders and families of the victims. We will focus in the areas of post-traumatic stress counseling and psychosocial support. We are also exploring setting up scholarships to assist children who have lost parents in these disasters.

Useful information on how to discuss the tragedy with children may be found at: www.brighthorizons.com/talktochildren

Mercy Corps deeply appreciates the messages of support and encouragement for all Americans that we have received from around the world.
