MCC makes second contribution to India floodsMennonite Central Committee AKRON, Pa. -- Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is contributing $27,700 Cdn./$18,000 U.S. for 300 families in eastern India's Orissa State who suffered severe flooding in July. The contribution will be distributed through the Society for Nature, Education and Health (SNEH), an Indian non-governmental organization. This money is in addition to an earlier MCC flood relief contribution of $76,300 Cdn./$50,000 U.S., which was distributed through the Church's Auxiliary for Social Action. The 300 families, located in the Jagatsinghpur district of Orissa, received emergency food aid from SNEH immediately following the floods. MCC's contribution will provide rice while community members work to rebuild roads and dikes this fall. A portion of the contribution will also purchase seeds for each household. Farmers in the area have been out of work because the floods destroyed much of the summer rice crop, according to recent SNEH reports. SHEH has been involved in development and relief activities in Orissa for the past eight years. MCC first became involved with SNEH following a super cyclone that hit Orissa in 1999.
