AKRON, Pa. -- In what turned out to be the region's hottest week of the summer so far, riders in the Buggies, Barns and Bridges Ride for Relief covered nearly 250 miles Aug. 5 to 9 to raise money for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). Pictured riding in tandem through the "finish line" at MCC offices are Ed (in front) and Clara Yoder of Harrisonburg, Va. Behind them are Peter (in front) and Eli Passage of Akron.

Some 50 bicyclists participated in the ride, which raised nearly $20,000 through pledges for MCC efforts to plant trees and strengthen agricultural practices in Cambodia and Laos. Ranging in age from 10 to 74, participants came from as far away as Oregon; their transportation included four recumbent bicycles, three regular tandems and a recumbent tandem. Daily high temperatures during the ride through scenic Lancaster and Lebanon counties ranged from 91 to 101 degrees, plus high humidity.

The ride, sponsored by MCC East Coast, alternates annually with a West Coast MCC ride. Nearly a dozen similar rides across the United States and Canada raise thousands of dollars for MCC every year. To find the ride nearest you, contact your regional or provincial MCC office.
