Uganda -- The death toll from the Ebola virus continues to rise in Uganda, where 153 of the 373 people diagnosed with Ebola have died. The struggle against Ebola was dealt a blow last week when the medical superintendent of Lacor Hospital, one of the two main hospitals in Gulu handling Ebola cases, was struck with the viral fever and died.

"His death has been a massive discouragement to people," reported Mary Lou Klassen, Uganda country co-representative.

She said the media and ministry of health have done a good job of educating the public about the virus. "However, there is still a large part of the population who are illiterate and who do not have access to the media," she added.

The Gulu archdiocese declared three days of prayers and fasting recently for Ebola victims.
