DHAKA, Bangladesh -- At an all-day celebration in Dhaka, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) workers recognized 30 years of MCC work in Bangladesh. More than 400 past and present MCC workers, both local and international, attended the Oct. 23 event. The celebration began with addresses by special guests Matia Chowdhury, Bangladeshi Minister of Agriculture, Paul Myers, director of Ten Thousand Villages, and Edgar Metzler, director of MCC International Programs. Later presentations included storytelling, drama, a cultural show of music and traditional dance and a trivia game about past MCC workers and events.

MCC's work in Bangladesh began after the worst cyclone of the century swept through the country, then part of Pakistan, in 1970. MCC sent personnel to help distribute relief supplies. One of these workers, Ed Martin, now MCC director of Central/Southern Asia, also attended the celebration. Thirty years later, MCC continues to provide material aid to Bangladesh, but programs focus mainly on agriculture and job creation (see sidebar). With more than 230 staff, most of them Bangladeshi nationals, Bangladesh is one of MCC's largest programs.
