Bangladesh —Giving birth is now safer for some rural Bangladeshi women. Over the past three years, MCC workers in Noakhali District have invited local midwives to participate in 10-day training courses that teach sanitary techniques. Nearly all births in the area are home births with midwife assistance. Through their work with rural families, MCC workers learned that these home births leaves many women with infections and bladder and fertility problems. Social stigmas associated with these problems cause additional shame. Unsafe traditional practices, such as placing manure on the severed umbilical cord, also put the infants' health at risk. Through the 33 midwives who have been trained, local women are becoming familiar with safer procedures and are coming to expect sanitary practices.
