ASMARA, Eritrea -- Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will contribute $62,000 Cdn./$40,300 U.S. toward 1,000 metric tons of lentils to be exchanged through the Canadian FoodGrains Bank (CFGB) for 2,200 metric tons of sorghum in Eritrea.

The Kale Heywet Church, an indigenous church in Eritrea, will distribute the food.

The Eritrean government, noted Willie Reimer, director of MCC food, disaster and material resources programs, is presently more open to churches and nongovernmental organizations, like CFGB, being involved in relief work there. This is a change, said Reimer, from previous government policy which spurned outside relief.
