SAN PEDRO CARCHA, Guatemala -- Below lush green mountainsides, so steep and towering they appear to lean over the school, sits the Bezaleel Educational Center.

From the placing of the school's first brick, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has been there, offering design and construction support, supplying work teams, funding and now long-term MCC volunteers. Recently, MCC announced it would supply $18,000 Cdn./$13,000 U.S. to build a new well for the school.

A boarding school for the K'ekchi Mennonite Church, the school houses 104 students, teachers, a pastor and two MCC workers, Kelly and Julie Dunkelberger of Wichita, Kan., who help administer the school.

Menno Loewen, an MCC volunteer from Belize, designed the school's water supply system. The ingenious system collects rain water into filters that run to a cistern under the stage in the main auditorium.

"Although creative appropriate technology work included water catchment systems, as the school gets off to a good start it is not raining enough to supply the school's needs," explains Dunkelberger.

This is the first year in a three-year assignment for the Dunkelbergers. Julie and Kelly are members of Mennonite Church of the Servant, Wichita.
