AKRON, Pa. -- The American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP) has rated Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) among the best in international relief and development. MCC received an A rating for excellence from the Bethesda, Md., organization.

AIP gave an A to any organization that channels 75 percent or more of its revenues toward program costs while generally spending $36 Cdn./$25 U.S. or less to raise $145 Cdn./$100 U.S. MCC spends $2.90 Cdn./$2 U.S. for every $145 Cdn./$100 U.S. raised, and allocated 90.7 percent of its revenues toward program costs.

"The real story is the shops, relief sales and people who volunteer their time to MCC," said Brenda Wagner, MCC director of Constituency Ministries. "They are the reason our fund-raising costs are kept so low. These are the people who give their time and resources to make MCC's North American and international programs possible."

MCC thrift stores, relief sales and other constituency-run fund-raisers brought in $13.9 million Cdn./$9.6 million U.S. in 1999.
