AKRON, Pa. - Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) has announced the purchase of a facility for the relocation of the MDS Binational office.

Experiencing tremendous growth since its legal separation from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in 1993, an increase in disasters and volunteer activity has caused MDS to seek larger office space to efficiently carry out added administrative duties.

Upon MDS Board approval at the November 1999 meeting, a two-story brick house, formerly the Akron post office, was purchased and settlement was made on January 13. The house is located at 1018 Main Street, just four blocks from the current Binational office where MDS leases space from MCC. The first floor will house the MDS office while the second floor apartment will be renovated to accommodate MDS visitors as well as those going through leadership orientation.

"We are excited about this new venture that will not only secure permanent office space and allow for more growth, but is also an opportunity for MDS to further establish its identity," said Tom Smucker, MDS executive coordinator. "We're glad to have had this local facility made available to us so that we can maintain our cooperation with MCC."

Minor renovations on the building began earlier this month with local volunteer help. The anticipated move in date is March.

Marisa Doncevic is MDS Communications Coordinator.
