Patricia Skarulis Named Vice President, Information Systems

Patricia C. Skarulis has been named Vice President, Information Systems, and Chief Information Officer at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). Ms. Skarulis oversees a 314-member staff with a national reputation for technical innovation.

"Pat Skarulis' extensive experience in healthcare and the world of academic computing make her an extraordinary recruitment for MSKCC," said John R. Gunn, Executive Vice President.

Before joining MSKCC, Ms. Skarulis served as Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago for the past ten years. At Rush-Presbyterian, she collaborated successfully with the medical staff to implement on-line order entry and other enterprise-wide systems supporting clinical programs. Under her leadership, Rush-Presbyterian achieved a ranking in the "Top 100 Most Wired Hospitals" list. She also served as an Assistant Professor in the Rush University master's degree program in Health Systems Management.

"Sloan-Kettering has a strong and well managed information technology department," said Ms. Skarulis. "I look upon this as an opportunity to build on excellence. I am very interested in both the development of clinical systems, and in working with researchers at the Sloan-Kettering Institute."

Ms. Skarulis is planning to collaborate with MSKCC staff to better utilize clinical data collected over decades. "I would like to see what we can do with it from a knowledge management standpoint in terms of improving patient care a and achieving research goals," she said.

Ms. Skarulis brings more than 20 years' experience in the academic sector to Memorial Sloan-Kettering. She served as Vice President, Information Systems at Duke University and was a member of the university faculty for five years where she was a Professor of the Practice of Computer Science. She joined Duke from Princeton University where she began as Director of Administrative Systems and Data Processing and was promoted to become Director of Administrative Services and Information Systems. Her earlier experience included positions at Rutgers University, Bowdoin College and Bell Laboratories.

Ms. Skarulis was born and raised in the New York area, and spent her childhood on Long Island. She holds both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in mathematics from St. John's University in Queens.
