New Service Chiefs AppointedMemorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is pleased to announce the appointments of two new service chiefs. Dr. Peter G. Cordeiro, Acting Chief of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service since January 2001, has been appointed Chief of the Plastic and Reconstructive Service. As acting chief Dr. Cordeiro has effectively led the plastic and reconstructive service in achieving their research and clinical goals. Dr. Cordeiro is an internationally renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon with a special expertise in breast and facial reconstruction and microsurgical procedures. His work has focused on refining and expanding the use of tissue transplants for complex reconstructive problems. He is currently researching new techniques in microsurgery, breast, midfacial and mandible reconstruction. Dr. Cordeiro received his M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School in 1983, and completed his surgery and plastic surgery surgical residencies at New England Deaconess Hospital and New York University. He also completed fellowships in microsurgery and craniofacial surgery prior to joining the staff at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 1992. Dr. W. Douglas Wong has been named Chief of the Colorectal Service. Dr. Wong, is a renowned colorectal surgeon and authority on endorectal ultrasonography. He pioneered the use of ultrasound and imaging techniques to evaluate rectal tumors before surgery. He is known internationally and nationally as a leader in the exploration of reconstructive surgery of the anal sphincter following surgical removal of a cancerous rectum - a procedure that will enable patients to retain bowel function. Dr. Wong received his M.D. degree in 1972 from the University of Manitoba in Canada. He completed a residency in surgery at the Manitoba Affiliated Teaching Hospitals and a fellowship in colorectal surgery at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Wong is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada). He has been on staff with Memorial Sloan-Kettering since 1997.
