American Humane Selects Suzanne Barnard to Oversee Public Policy Office in Washington, DCAmerican Humane Association American Humane, the nation's only organization dedicated to both child and animal protection, has hired Suzanne Barnard as its new vice president of public policy. American Humane's Public Policy Office, based in Washington, DC, plays a key role in the Association's mission to protect children and animals by consulting with legislators and policy makers about important child and animal welfare legislation. Barnard previously worked for American Humane in a variety of capacities, including acting director of Children's Services, and brings to the Association more than 25 years of experience in child welfare. "We are excited to have Suzanne back with us. As the only national voice for both children and animals, American Humane's Public Policy Office advocates for a wide range of legislative issues. Her expertise, skill, and passion will serve her well in this demanding position," says Tim O'Brien, American Humane's president. Before rejoining American Humane, Barnard worked for the Denver Department of Human Services for 11 years and was the executive director for the Denver Family Crisis Center and for Families First in Arapahoe County, Colorado. She served on the Families First board of directors for three years. Most recently, Barnard served as a grantee of the Annie E. Casey Foundation (AECF) and worked at the American Public Human Services Association. While with AECF, she served as a member of the grant assessment team and a site team leader, helping states implement the core strategies of an AECF child welfare initiative called Family to Family.
