American Humane Association Honors Senator Wayne AllardAmerican Humane Association Englewood, CO (February 20, 2002)– The American Humane Association (AHA) today presented the Honorable Wayne Allard, United States Senator from Colorado, with its 2001 Humane Legislator of the Year Award. The award, originally scheduled to be given on September 11, 2001, at AHA's annual conference in Washington, DC, was presented today at a brief ceremony at the Brown Palace Hotel in downtown Denver, Colorado. "Senator Allard has worked tirelessly to better the lives of children and animals throughout his public career," said AHA President Tim O'Brien. "He has worked diligently over the years to support measures that strive to end the cycle of violence to both children and animals." Senator Allard, one of only two veterinarians in Congress, grew up in Colorado and attended Colorado State University. He first served in the Colorado General Assembly, before being elected to Congress. His most recent accomplishment regarding animal welfare was to sponsor anti-cockfighting legislation, which was included in the Farm Bill of 2001. He has supported AHA's annual Tag Day, an effort to inform people about the importance of pet identification. Senator Allard also assisted AHA's efforts to inform military personnel deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom about pet welfare and temporary pet foster care options available to them. Founded in 1877, the American Humane Association is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to protect both children and animals. From its headquarters outside Denver, Colorado, and from regional offices in Washington, DC, and Los Angeles, AHA provides national leadership in the development of programs, policies, and services on behalf of children and animals who are abused and neglected.
