Englewood, CO (February 13, 2002) - Do you know a kind kid with a passion for helping animals? Do you often say to yourself, "That kid deserves an award?" The American Humane Association couldn't agree more. If you want to see your favorite animal advocate receive much deserved recognition, enter him/her in AHA's Be Kind to Animals Kid Contest™ today!

The Be Kind to Animals (BKA) Contest™ is an annual award by the American Humane Association (AHA) to honor young people who make a difference in the lives of animals. Nominees are divided into two age groups, ages 6-9 and 10-13. A panel of judges selects a grand prizewinner and two runners-up from each group.

Winners of the BKA Contest™ are announced during Be Kind to Animals Week® (BKAW), celebrated this year May 5-11. Each grand prizewinner will receive a $5,000 college scholarship, generously provided by SIERRA®, The Safer Antifreeze. All the contest winners will receive a cool prize package and will be featured in the BKAW section of the AHA website at www.americanhumane.org.

Persons 18 or older can nominate their favorite kind kid (with written permission from the child's legal guardian). All entries must be typed or hand printed in 200 words or less, telling AHA why this kind kid deserves to be the 2002 Be Kind to Animals Kid. Be sure to include the name, home address, and phone numbers of the nominator and the child. Feel free to include photos, videos, or other supporting materials with your nomination. Complete contest rules and nomination forms can be obtained from the AHA website at www.americanhumane.org or by calling AHA's Cindy Strowbridge at 800-227-4645, ext. 466. All nominations must be received by AHA no later than April 15, 2002.

This year, BKAW is carrying out its message of kindness toward animals through the support of SIERRA®, Friskies PetCare Company, and PetPlace.com

Founded in 1877, the American Humane Association (AHA) is the nation's only national organization dedicated to child and animal protection. From its headquarters outside Denver, Colorado, and from regional offices in Washington, DC, and Los Angeles, AHA provides national leadership in the development of programs, policies, and services on behalf of children and animals who are abused and neglected.
