National Conference To Focus On Innovative Partnerships Helping Support Children And Families

The American Humane Association (AHA), a national non-profit dedicated to protecting children and animals, today announced it is bringing its fourth annual roundtable on community-based child protection and family support programs to Atlanta. The roundtable, to be held March 12-14, 2001, will feature top child welfare experts discussing innovative ways communities come together to prevent child abuse and neglect. As in previous years, participants will refine their skills and learn new ways to support their work with families.

"For over 123 years, an important part of the American Humane Association's mission has been to protect children from violence, abuse and neglect," said Paul DiLorenzo, Director of AHA's Children's Services. "An major piece of this on-going work is how people and organizations within communities can work together to help keep children safe and support families. Whether it's a government child welfare agency working with a faith-based organization, or a school and business teaming up, there are unique partnerships within our communities that help protect children."

DiLorenzo noted that while many people think only of government child welfare systems when it comes to preventing child abuse, across the country there are also community organizations working to protect children and support families. "Throughout America, people are working together to make sure children are safe from abuse, violence and neglect. Community-based organizations and community residents are important partners in ensuring that our children grow-up knowing that they will be cared for and loved."

This year, the American Humane Association is partnering with many local and national organizations to present the roundtable. Co-sponsoring organizations from the State of Georgia include Georgia State University, Office of Community Outreach and Partnership, and The Atlanta Project, Georgia Academy For Children and Youth Professionals, Inc., Georgia's Children's Trust Fund Commission, and the Georgia Council on Child Abuse, Inc.
