The American Humane Association (AHA), a national animal and child protection organization, today strongly condemned the host of the syndicated radio program The Mike Gallagher Show for his planned on-air slaughter of a cow. According to the show's website, the cow will be slaughtered in response to a recent parody of the "Got Milk?" campaign developed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The cow is scheduled to be slaughtered today in West Virginia and a tape will be played during tomorrow's broadcast of The Mike Gallagher Show. In response to this action, the American Humane Association today issued the following statements:

From Nicholas Gilman, Director of Animal Programs

"The American Humane Association is outraged that Mr. Gallagher would kill an animal because he has a disagreement with PETA. By slaughtering the cow, Mr. Gallagher is saying that if you have a disagreement with someone or an organization, it's OK to commit an act of violence. That's outrageous and completely irresponsible. As a society, we have to condemn the use of violence to settle our differences, whether it's violence committed against a person or an animal. Regardless of Mr. Gallagher's feelings about PETA, this is no way to get his message across to the public. The American Humane Association urges Mr. Gallagher to take the higher road in his dispute with PETA and reconsider the slaughter plans."

From Gini Barrett, Director of Western Regional Office, home of AHA's Film and Television Unit

"For 60 years, the American Humane Association has worked with the film and television industry to ensure that animals used in entertainment productions are not harmed. Clearly, Mr. Gallagher is using the slaughter of a cow to entertain his listeners. While our jurisdiction does not cover radio broadcasts, I can ensure you that under AHA guidelines for the use of animals in film and TV, this act is absolutely unacceptable. We have made tremendous progress over the past 60 years in the protection of animals used in entertainment. If he follows through with his plans, Mr. Gallagher is spitting in the eye of that humane progress. I would ask that Mr. Gallagher rethink this stunt and find a better, more humane way, to get his point across."
