More than half the people diagnosed with cancer in this country are treated with chemotherapy. While every patient's experience is different, today many of the side effects of chemotherapy can be prevented or minimized.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and CancerCare have developed a free telephone educational series entitled, "Improving the Chemotherapy Experience," to help people living with cancer and their caregivers develop a plan to manage the physical and emotional aspects of chemotherapy.

Patients and caregivers can hear from leading experts about strategies to prevent delays in treatment and dose reductions; manage mouth sores and skin irritation; avoid infection; cope with anemia; and deal with stress and anxiety.

The teleconference series will include the following upcoming programs:

  • Thursday, June 12, 2003, 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. EST, "Understanding Chemotherapy," by Ronald Blum, M.D., Director, Cancer Center & Programs, Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, New York City
  • Thursday, July 17, 2003, 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. EST, "Managing the Emotional Effects of Chemotherapy," by Kimberly Frederick, L.C.S.W., M.S.W., Manager, Information Resource Center, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
  • An earlier workshop, "Preparing for Chemotherapy," presented by Theresa Yannaco, R.N., M.S.N., A.O.C.N., Oncology Nurse Educator, is available on the Society's Web site.
