Today, adoption opportunities are also available in several countries including China, Thailand, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Romania, Russia and Vietnam. Children adopted through the international program are given the opportunity for a bright future through permanent placement in the United States. However, many children remain in orphanages hoping to be adopted by an American Family. Gladney is especially interested in providing humanitarian aid to these foreign countries. Its mission of "creating bright futures through adoption" reaches worldwide. Current projects include feeding and clothing orphans in several Russian orphanages; providing medical assistance, food and clothing for orphans and elderly individuals through the Vietnamese Red Cross; and assisting in the rebuilding of a new orphanage in Romania. "Gladney feels very strongly that we have a responsibility to the many children who may never be adopted. With the help of Gladney families, we're able to make a difference in those childrens' lives and the countries in which they live," says Marshall Williams, Gladney's Vice President of Adoption. Based in Fort Worth, Texas since its inception in 1887, the Gladney Center for Adoption has placed more than 25,000 children (internationally and domestically) in forever homes and served more then 36,000 birth mothers. The agency also maintains the largest, most comprehensive maternity home in the United States.
