Fund for Peace Receives Hewlett Grant Award to Promote PeaceFund for Peace The Fund for Peace recently received a one-year planning grant of $500,000 in general support from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation of Menlo Park, California. The grant, which represents more than 25% of The Fund's current fiscal budget, will support its new strategic focus on finding practical solutions to alleviate conditions which cause internal war, terrorism, collapsed states and inter-group conflict. Founded in 1957, The Fund's mission is to prevent war through research, education and action. "We are deeply grateful for this Hewlett Foundation investment in peace," said Fund President Dr. Pauline H. Baker. It will strengthen our ability to build new programs around our current work: strengthening early warning and assessment; containing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, building bridges between corporations and human rights groups and establishing criteria for military intervention in humanitarian emergencies when preventative actions don't work." The grant comes one year after The Fund for Peace received an A+ rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy Charity Rating Guide; only fifteen of 400 national/international organizations received this high mark. In 1998, Money magazine named The Fund to its top ten non-profit list for value in giving. "We remain committed to being a good philanthropic investment, devoting our resources to developing practical solutions that promote peace and engaging leaders and citizens in the process," said Anne C. Bader, Vice President, Development and Communications. We are recognized for paving new ground, opening up new frontiers, and providing links between the 'thinkers' and the 'doers'. We firmly believe that building peace in the 21st century requires such partnerships."
