Residents of Nation's Capital to Hear Experts Debunk Myths About Homosexuality Amid Threats of Protest

Today's edition of the Washington Post features a full-page ad recounting the journey of Amy Tracy, a former lesbian who worked as a press secretary at the Washington, D.C. headquarters of the National Organization for Women (NOW). Tracy, now a senior writer for Focus on the Family, details how she left her life as a feminist activist and a lesbian to pursue a relationship with Jesus Christ.

The ad centers around Focus on the Family's upcoming Love Won Out conference in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 2 at Immanuel Bible Church in Springfield, Va. Tracy will speak at the event, the 19th such conference the Christian ministry has held to address the causes and prevention of homosexuality.

"Activist organizations in Washington have ridiculed and attacked those of us who have left homosexuality. Some want to deny our story and silence us," Tracy states in the ad. "Our only desire is to help people who want to be free."

Tracy spent 10 years in the D.C. area, part of which was at NOW's national headquarters, recruiting and supervising hundreds of volunteers for abortion rights marches and protests and training activists across the country in nonviolent civil disobedience. She also served as spokeswoman and arranged for coverage of special events, demonstrations and national conferences.

Love Won Out is primarily led by men and women whose stories are similar to Tracy's: former homosexuals who are experts in the field of gender identity. They will address topics such as the clinical development of homosexuality; the relationship between homosexuality and genetics; the pro-homosexual agenda in public schools; homosexual recovery; and the responsibility of Christians to offer an appropriate, compassionate response to the homosexual community. Special sessions for teachers, pastors and parents will be available. Local ministries and organizations also will offer resources.

Local pro-homosexual groups are expected to protest the Love Won Out event.

Focus on the Family has shared this message of hope with more than 14,000 men and women who have attended the ministry's Love Won Out conferences since 1998. In the last year, the conference has seen nearly a 25 percent increase in attendance; future conferences are scheduled through 2003.
