Up-to-the-minute information, interactive tools and a personalized experience deliver the most comprehensive cancer resource on the Web

The American Cancer Society, the nation's leading voluntary health agency, today announced the re-launch of its Web site, www.cancer.org. With new features including personalized content, interactive health planning tools and online discussion groups - along with the Society's trademark wealth of news, information and original content - cancer.org has become the most comprehensive resource center for the cancer community.

"When you face a cancer diagnosis, it can be a devastating experience," said David S. Rosenthal, M.D., volunteer chairman of the American Cancer Society's Health Content Advisory Group. "It can feel like the most lonely time of your life. We wanted to use the power of the Internet to help people connect – with one another and with the American Cancer Society – in order to help people realize they are not alone in this fight."

The new site is the result of nearly two years of development – using feedback from cancer patients, families, and leading scientific researchers and health care professionals. It is dedicated to empowering people with the tools to make their own personal decisions about cancer treatment, and to help them cope with cancer in their lives. Visitors will have access to a wide range of American Cancer Society services and information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Visitors can then take advantage of cancer.org's many interactive tools. From personal planners that keep track of doctor's appointments and hospital visits, to health risk assessment tools, to cancer treatment decision and support resources, the site is designed to serve as a complete tool that helps people manage their daily lives while living with cancer.

"We wanted to make cancer.org a true interactive resource that puts the power of personalized information in the hands of our users," said Terry M. Music, Strategic Business Manager for Cancer Information at the American Cancer Society National Home Office and herself a cancer survivor. "As everyone's experience with cancer is different, so is the kind of information they seek when they come to our site. From that standpoint, we designed cancer.org so that it could be customized to fit each individual person's needs."

In addition to the new look and feel, cancer.org has been given improved navigation and streamlined search features that make it even easier to find a greater variety of cancer information. Users can log on to find anything and everything they might need or want – from the latest news and research reports, treatment information, links to hospitals, survivor stories and links to events in their local communities.

Cancer.org leverages the tremendous interest that the public has shown in capturing health information on the Web with trusted brand name of the American Cancer Society. "There's an overwhelming amount of information on cancer circulating the Web," said Music. "Unfortunately, not all of it is accurate or up to date. At cancer.org, people can easily search the wealth of resources of the world's leading cancer organization and know that they are getting the most accurate, reliable information available provided by today's top researchers and scientists in the field of oncology."

In order to offer visitors a personalized Web experience that leverages the latest interactive cancer tools, the American Cancer Society partnered with leading edge business and technology consultant Sapient (NASDAQ: SAPE). Through its unique user-focused approach, Sapient helped the American Cancer Society identify the very specific needs of the online cancer community and create a first-of-its-kind Internet cancer resource that is relevant, comprehensive and easy-to-use.

"By incorporating input and ideas from the cancer community into its online strategy, cancer.org has broken new ground in the way health care information is distributed via the Internet," said Lawrence J. Colvin, managing director of Public Services at Sapient. "Sapient's ability to combine a deep understanding of the online user with a strong background in advanced technology was critical in helping the American Cancer Society build a successful online experience." The site's content is so comprehensive it has been chosen to be one of the primary sources of cancer information for Yahoo! Health's "Cancer Center." Cancer.org will also be a vibrant online community where those sharing in the cancer experience can connect with one another. The site offers numerous areas of interest for anyone whose life is touched by cancer – as a new patient, a long-term survivor, a relative, a volunteer, or a researcher. Whether it's to chat with people in a similar situation, ask questions about the disease, connect with someone in the community or share personal experiences with others, cancer.org will serve as the virtual link to the American Cancer Society – connecting people across the country to a close-knit community that can offer guidance, information and hope.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
