American Cancer Society Elects New National Board Members; New Volunteer Leadership Comes From States of NC, CA, PA, NE, NY, GAAmerican Cancer Society The American Cancer Society, the nation's leading voluntary health agency, elected six new members to its 32-member Board of Directors at the Society's Annual Meeting held earlier this month in Chicago. Elected to the Board by the Southeast Division was James Murray of North Carolina. Mr. Murray has been an American Cancer Society volunteer since 1987 and has served as treasurer and Budget/Finance Committee chairman of the Society's Southeast Division. He is a Network Manager with the IBM Corporation and lives in Durham, North Carolina. Thomas D. Fogel, MD, was nominated by the Society's California Division. He has been an American Cancer Society volunteer since 1990. He is a past recipient of the California Division's prestigious "Quality of Life" award, as well as "Volunteer of the Year" award from his local Unit. Dr. Fogel is a radiation oncologist at the Cabrillo Radiation Oncology Center in Ventura and president of the Coastal Radiation oncology Medical Group, Inc. in Santa Maria, California. The Pennsylvania Division chose Thomas J. Tachovsky, MD. Dr. Tachovsky has been a volunteer with the Division for more than 30 years. He is past Division president, Chaired the Division Professional Education Committee, and is actively involved with legislative issues on tobacco and cancer control in the state of Pennsylvania. Dr. Tachovsky is a general surgeon at St. Lukes Hospital in Bethlehem, PA. Alan G. Thorson, MD, FACS, has a long history as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society, beginning with his involvement as president of the Omaha, Nebraska Unit. He has received numerous awards and citations in the health field area, including Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care, 1999. Dr. Thorson is an oncologist in private practice in Omaha, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. He was nominated by the Society's Heartland Division. Additionally, the Society's National Assembly elected two national volunteer Directors-at-Large. Carolyn D. Runowicz, MD, is the Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. She has been a volunteer with the National American Cancer Society since 1990. She has served on several committees, including the Gynecology Committee at National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project and the Public Issues Committee at the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She is currently serving on the Eli Lilly Scientific Advisory Board and the Medical Advisory Board, National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. John Whitehead is an entrepreneur with offices in Atlanta and New York City. He is a graduate of Williams College, with a BA in Biology and Chemistry. He did doctoral work in biochemistry at Case Western Reserve University. Mr. Whitehead has worked for many years in the healthcare field, serving as president and CEO of two healthcare companies. He has served on several foundations, boards and councils, including the Lasker Foundation and the Campaign for Medical Research. The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
