The American Cancer Society, the nation's leading voluntary health organization and the leading source of web-based cancer information, and Pfizer, Inc., a research-based, global pharmaceutical company, are collaborating with the online development of the American Cancer Society Community Resources Database (CRD) through the Society's website www.cancer.org.

The CRD database is scheduled to debut online in late Summer 2000.

The CRD is an American Cancer Society virtual resource that provides the latest state-of-the-art information to cancer patients and those affected by cancer about ongoing, community-based cancer programs and services. The database contains more than 51thousand entries, ranging from the availability of local transportation, exercise and nutritional resources to counseling options and available survivor networks. More than 34 hundred local American Cancer Society offices nationwide have worked to collect information within the Society and distribute it in hard copy form to cancer patients in communities from coast to coast.

"Historically, Pfizer has been a leader in both pharmaceuticals and health education," said Society national chief medical officer, Harmon Eyre, MD. "This grant from Pfizer will enable the company and the American Cancer Society to achieve a shared vision -- to better connect cancer patients and their families with the local resources that can provide them with a better quality of life." According to the Society, there are now more than 8.5 million cancer survivors in the United States, whose ranks are growing each day thanks to advances in cancer detection and treatment.

"The American Cancer Society has an extensive knowledge and network of community-based cancer programs," said Karen Katen, senior vice president, Pfizer, Inc. and an American Cancer Society Foundation trustee. "We are proud to help make this information available to cancer patients across America, particularly the growing number of Internet users. We look forward to collaborating with the Society further in the years ahead."

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
