In appreciation for his many years of public service and leadership in the fight against cancer, the American Cancer Society today presented its Public Policy Leadership Award to U.S. Rep. Jim Greenwood (R-PA) at a reception in New Orleans.

The American Cancer Society's Public Policy Leadership Award is given to those outstanding individuals whose efforts promote public policies that advance research, prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer. "Throughout his political career, Representative Greenwood has been a strong advocate for public health and children's issues," said Daniel E. Smith, National Vice President for Federal and State Government Relations for the American Cancer Society. "He knows that cancer screening, detection, awareness, prevention, follow-up care and treatment services are vitally important to saving lives. Because of his leadership role in the legislative fight against cancer, we are proud to present Rep. Jim Greenwood with the American Cancer Society's Public Policy Leadership Award.

This year, Representative Greenwood worked closely with the American Cancer Society on a number of public health measures, including support for increased funding for cancer research through the National Institutes of Health, and increased funding for the cancer-fighting, prevention, and education programs coordinated through the Center for Disease Control and Prevention-including the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
