FDA Advisory Committe Recommmends FDA Approval of Tamoxifen as a Breast Cancer PreventiveAmerican Cancer Society The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Oncology Drugs Advisory Committee recommended on September 2, 1998 that the FDA approve the drug tamoxifen as a breast cancer preventive. The FDA is not bound by the committee's recommendations, but usually follows them. A final decision is expected in November. Many questions remain to be answered about the long-term effectiveness of tamoxifen as a preventive. Women and their physicians need to make informed decisions about the risks and benefits of tamoxifen.
