Medical Relief to Afghanistan Refugees

SANTA BARBARA, CA (October 8, 2001)

- Direct Relief International has now completed three shipments of medical supplies to help the refugee relief effort along the Pakistan/Afghanistan border

- Direct Relief International serves the Aryan Medical Center which treats about 300 refugees each day, on average.

- The most recent shipment, which includes a large quantity of antibiotics, was sent to help support the work of 3 mobile medical clinics in Quetta, Pakistan.

- Direct Relief International is aslo sending 5 disaster modules (emergency health kits) that can service 10,000 people for 3 months.

- Direct Relief International continues to work through government, local, and international relief organizations.

"Direct Relief International, along with many other relief and humanitarian assistance organizations, is aware that many people in Afghanistan have experienced great hardship under the Taliban's rule. Our assistance continues to be directed to the innocent people who have been placed in extremely vulnerable circumstances," said Thomas Tighe, President of Direct Relief International.
