Window on the World to be Installed at Direct Relief InternationalDirect Relief International Nadya Penoff, a world-renowned stained glass artist, has spent the past six months guiding her local Adult Education class through the creation of a magnificent new stained glass window to be installed at the headquarters of Direct Relief International, Santa Barbara's own global humanitarian aid organization. The window, measuring 40" x 69", is a colorfully rendered representation of a map of the world. It will be installed at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 22 in a mahogany frame in the reception area of Direct Relief headquarters at 27 South La Patera Lane. Penoff has been working with stained glass for 27 years, crafting windows for churches nationwide and in such far-flung locales as Turkey and Kenya. "My area of expertise," she says, "is playing with light and color to create a specific atmosphere in a building, according to purpose: a spiritual atmosphere for churches, an uplifting atmosphere for a homeless shelter, a scientific atmosphere for a medical building." Some 15 Adult Education students have been working at the Wake Center in Goleta since September on the stained glass window for Direct Relief.
