SANTA BARBARA, CA, DECEMBER 8, 2000 - Forbes magazine has cited Direct Relief International, a Santa Barbara-based humanitarian aid organization, as one of the ten best charities in the United States with regard to fundraising efficiency. The ranking, reported in the December 11 issue of Forbes, is based on the magazine's comparative study of U.S. nonprofit organizations to assess which made the most efficient use of donations received.

"We are delighted that Forbes has highlighted our efficiency in this area," said Direct Relief International President and CEO Thomas Tighe. "Our entire purpose is to help people who are profoundly poor and require medical assistance. We're committed to making every dollar count," Tighe said.

The Forbes fundraising-efficiency index is based on the percentage of total funds raised from the general public that remain after subtracting fundraising costs. Direct Relief International was one of only nine charities to be rated 100% on this basis.

Direct Relief International was founded in 1948 and operates out of a warehouse facility in Santa Barbara. This year, the organization has sent more than $62 million worth of medicines, equipment, and supplies to 47 countries to assist refugees, victims of natural disaster, and people with limited or no access to health care.
