COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO., December 20, 2000 - Compassion International employees have sponsored fund-raising activities in a yearlong effort to benefit two local charities of their choice. At their annual Christmas dinner, Compassion employees presented checks for $3,500 each to Women of Courage and Women of Valor.

According to Carmen Hernandez, Compassion's employee relations manager, "The $7,000 that our 280 headquarters employees raised is a record figure. Employees sponsored bake sales, breakfasts, lunches; sold items from many of our ministry countries; and even purchased 'casual days' to raise the funds to benefit both charities."

"Your gift is a great help to us as we assist single mothers and their children," states Darlene Harris, founder and director of Women of Courage. "Women of Courage is not a 'band-aid' approach to helping single moms who choose to become members of our ministry. It is a long-term approach that helps women spiritually, practically, and emotionally through mentoring, budget help, emergency assistance, and a lot of encouragement. We also help build a strong spiritual base through networking, fellowship, and social events. Our Courageous Kids program addresses the special needs of children in single-mother families by teaching them spiritual truths and practical and emotional skills. They learn that God and His people love them."

The parallel, church-based ministries of Women of Courage and Women of Valor have been reaching out to single mothers in El Paso County since 1992. To date, approximately 700 women have been helped by the ministries.

Founded in 1952, Compassion International is a Christian not-for-profit organization dedicated to the long-term holistic development of children living in poverty. Working with more than 200 different denominations in more than 2,100 church-based projects, Compassion is reaching out to more than 370,000 children in 22 countries, including the United States.
