U.S. News & World Report Recognizes City of Hope Cancer Center As One of America's Best HospitalsCity of Hope For the second consecutive year, City of Hope Cancer Center has been named as one of America's best cancer hospitals by U.S.News & World Report. City of Hope is one of only two Southern California hospitals and the only institution in the San Gabriel Valley to appear in this year's ranking of cancer hospitals. The world-renowned research and treatment center improved its 2003 position in the America's Best Hospitals ranking of the top 50 medical centers for cancer treatment by four places, coming in at number 38. Available online at www.usnews.com and in the July 12 printed edition, the 15th annual U.S.News special report features the 177 most outstanding medical centers chosen from among 6,012 hospitals across the country, in 17 areas of expertise. "City of Hope's position among the nation's leading cancer centers by U.S.News & World Report is a testament to our commitment to delivering the most innovative treatments in an environment of healing," said Michael A. Friedman, MD, president and chief executive officer, City of Hope. City of Hope is one of only 38 institutions in the nation to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). To earn this elite designation, a center must undergo a rigorous peer-review process, maintain a significant base of individually funded research projects and be heavily involved in community outreach, among other requirements. "City of Hope and the other NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers conduct some of the world's leading biomedical and cancer research and offer the most advanced clinical protocols," said Theodore G. Krontiris, MD, PhD, director, City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center and executive vice president for Medical and Scientific Affairs. "That is why 36 of these centers appear in this year's rankings." In addition to the America's Best Hospitals honor, City of Hope has been ranked highly in numerous health care evaluations. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) gave City of Hope an overall score of 99 in its most recent survey – the highest score among the nation's 11 freestanding cancer centers, placing City of Hope in the top 1 percent of all hospitals in the country. The 2003 Patients Evaluation of Performance in California (PEP-C) survey, the largest patient satisfaction survey in the nation, named City of Hope as one of only four hospitals to receive the highest marks in all categories from patients.
