Group Raises More Than $212,000 for Cancer Research

April 15th turned out to be not quite a "taxing" day for members of the Southern California Food Industries Circle. At their ninth annual golf tournament, sponsored by Quaker/Tropicana/Gatorade Sales, the Deli/Dairy division raised more than $212,000 for the City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute. Funds raised on this day of golf will go toward research to fight cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Representing more than 1,000 leading retailers, manufacturers and brokers within the Southern California food industries, the Food Industries Circle (FIC) for City of Hope is one of the largest industry volunteer support arms for City of Hope. The FIC has raised more than $86 million since the Circle's founding 29 years ago.

"We have always felt it is our mission to help find a cure for cancer and other life-threatening illnesses," said Bill MacAloney, FIC president/Jax Markets. "We are proud to support City of Hope," added Executive Vice President Ken Hanshaw who along with Golf Chair Allan Baum of Acosta Sales and Marketing are longtime members of the FIC.

The day included golfing, a reception/buffet dinner and an awards ceremony at the Sherwood Country Club. More than 50 retailers were in attendance including Gary Rocheleau of Vons/A Safeway Co., Don Baker of Stater Bros, Steve Lewis, Kory Burwell, Chuck Ackerman & Norm Carhill of Ralphs Grocery, Dennis Bassler, senior vice president of Albertsons, John Halb of Albertsons and Mike Mortensen of Food 4 Less.
