Funds Will Help Children Treated In Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Throughout the Southeastern United States

Children's Miracle Network announces today that Food Lion raised over $2.4 million for hospitalized children in 2001. The supermarket chain credits the hard work and generosity of its associates, customers, and vendors. These funds will benefit more than two million children treated annually at 33 Children's Miracle Network hospitals located throughout the southeastern United States. Food Lion is CMN's largest contributor among all grocery retailers.

A large portion of Food Lion's donation to Children's Miracle Network came a dollar at a time. During the month of April, customers purchased more than 600,000 paper Miracle Balloons at Food Lion checkouts with a one-dollar donation. Funds were also raised through local golf tournaments, bake sales, car washes and barbeques.

"Food Lion's relationship with Children's Miracle Network is a win-win partnership," said John Mercer, Food Lion vice president for retail services. "Our associates enjoy helping their friends and neighbors. It's heart warming to know our efforts help CMN help children in our local communities."

Food Lion has been a proud supporter of Children's Miracle Network since 1991. In that time, they have raised more than $13 million for Children's Miracle Network hospitals.

"Food Lion associates, customers, and vendors will help Children's Miracle Network hospitals provide life saving care 24 hours a day 365 days a year to children throughout the southeast," said Mick Shannon, president and CEO of Children's Miracle Network. "We are grateful for Food Lion's long term dedication and generosity to Children's Miracle Network."

Food Lion will kick off its 2002 CMN fund-raising campaign April 3.
