Catholic Relief Services Statement On Colombian Bishop’s AbductionCatholic Relief Services Catholic Relief Services (CRS) condemns the kidnapping of Bishop Jorge Enrique Jiménez and expresses its solidarity with the Colombian and Latin American church in the face of this act of violence. The bishop was seized along with Fr. Desiderio Orjuela by gunmen on November 11 as they headed to a religious ceremony in the town of Pacho, a few hours north of the capital, Bogotá. Jiménez is bishop of the Diocese of Zipaquira and President of the Latin American Bishops' Council (CELAM), which provides support for the region's 22 national bishops' conferences. He has served as a voice for peace and justice for all Colombians, and his kidnapping is a grim reminder of the danger faced by those who speak for peace in Colombia. CRS calls on the Colombian government to do its utmost to ensure the safe release of Bishop Jiménez and Fr. Orjuela. CRS has worked in Colombia since 1954 and continues to work in partnership with the local church toward a peaceful, secure future for the people of Colombia.
