New Name Better Reflects Foundation's Mission

The Cancer Research Foundation of America's board of directors voted unanimously at its quarterly board meeting yesterday to change its name to the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation effective January 1, 2003.

The Foundation was started in 1985 when Founder and President Carolyn Aldigé first understood the power of prevention to defeat cancer – and recognized that too few of the country's resources were used to promote cancer prevention research or education. Today, it is one of the nation's leading health organizations and has catapulted cancer prevention to prominence. "Prevention has always been our middle name. From the beginning, we have been dedicated to the prevention and early detection of cancer through research and education," said Aldigé. "This change reinforces what we work for every day: a world without cancer through prevention."

Since its inception the Foundation has supported more than 200 scientists from more than 150 of the nation's most prestigious academic medical centers and has been pivotal in developing a body of knowledge that is the basis for important cancer prevention and early detection strategies.

Through partnerships with corporations, universities, associations, neighborhood organizations and individuals, the Foundation weaves together strong coalitions to develop innovative education and awareness programs. Approaching education on three fronts – educating health care professionals; bringing education and early detection programs to medically underserved communities; and reaching a national audience through public awareness campaigns – the Foundation has provided more than $57 million in support of research and education

The Foundation will begin the transition to its new name immediately and will begin formally using the new name on January 1. The Foundation's Web site will remain www.preventcancer.org.
