WASHINGTON, DC, November 9, 2001 Tamra Bentsen, wife of Congressman Ken Bentsen (TX-25), joins the Cancer Research Foundation of America as the Executive Director of Congressional Families Action for Cancer Awareness program, a bipartisan effort dedicated to increasing the public's understanding of cancer awareness and early detection.

Mrs. Bentsen, who was awarded the Congressional Families Action for Cancer Awareness Spouse Award in September 2000 for promoting cancer awareness in her district, has been a longtime advocate of cancer prevention.

For the past five years, Mrs. Bentsen worked with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Komen National Race for the Cure in numerous capacities, including serving as executive co-chair of the race. A well-respected member of her Houston, Texas community, she has participated as a volunteer for numerous local and national advocacy organizations including the Intercultural Cancer Council, the American Cancer Society, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/Texas Women's Health Conference and the Pink Ribbons Project.

A recipient of numerous awards, she has been honored by the Sisters Network, a national African-American breast cancer survivor's support group, with the prestigious National Community Service Award.

"While we have made tremendous progress in the fight against cancer, if we hope to see a future that is cancer-free, we must continue to promote prevention and early detection of this disease," stated Mrs. Bentsen. "I am delighted to be a part of this innovative program that provides the opportunities and tools that spouses need to reach their constituents with these critical messages."

The Congressional Families Action for Cancer Awareness Program was founded in 1991 by the Congressional Club and the Cancer Research Foundation of America. The program is a bipartisan outreach effort by families of the Senate, House, Cabinet and Supreme Court members. By focusing attention on the importance of cancer awareness and early detection, participants strive to reduce mortality across the country.
