Cyber Panel of Physicians Answer Colorectal Cancer Prevention, Detection and Treatment Questions in Honor of March's National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

WASHINGTON, DC, February 9, 2001 - From March 1-31, in honor of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, physicians and experts from leading universities and medical centers from across the nation will answer questions about colorectal cancer prevention, detection and treatment at the National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month Web site, www.preventcancer.org/colorectal.

Visitors to the site will be able to submit questions via e-mail and responses to selected questions will be posted within two days time. The questions and answers will remain on the site all year-round.

Colorectal cancer - cancer of the colon and rectum - is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States for men and women combined. This year alone, approximately 135,400 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and over 56,000 people will die from the disease. But colorectal cancer is highly preventable and is easy to treat and often curable when detected early.

March 2001 begins the second annual nationwide effort to educate the public about what they can do to protect themselves against colorectal cancer and reduce the number of people who die each year from colorectal cancer. National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month was founded by the Cancer Research Foundation of America in collaboration with the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable and the American Digestive Health Foundation, and is being made possible through the generous contributions of its presenting sponsor Bristol-Myers Squibb Oncology, sustaining sponsor Pharmacia Corporation, and its benefactor Roche.
