WASHINGTON, DC - The Cancer Research Foundation of America will join forces with Katie Couric, Lily Tartikoff, Paul Simon, Dennis Franz and Rosie O'Donnell in an effort to raise awareness and funds to beat colorectal cancer. On October 8, 2000 in Washington, DC the first annual Rock N Race to fight colorectal cancer will kick-off at 8:30 a.m. on the Mall.

Colorectal cancer - cancer of the colon and rectum - is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States for both men and women combined. This year alone, approximately 130,000 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed, and 56,000 people will die from this disease.

But colorectal cancer can be prevented. The disease develops from polyps (grape-like growths on the lining of the colon and rectum). Removing these polyps, which can be found through screening, may prevent cancer from developing.

The money raised from Rock N Race will help support organizations working to fight colorectal cancer and will also fund cutting-edge research working toward effective prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer. The Cancer Research Foundation of America was chosen for its effort in spearheading March's National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Other beneficiaries include: The Colorectal Cancer Network, DC General Hospital, The Eric Davis Foundation, Greater Washington Coalition for Cancer Survivorship; Washington Hospital Cancer Center Institute; Howard University Cancer Center; Lombardi Cancer Center; The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance and the Washington Hospital Center Cancer Institute/Cancer Risk Assessment and Screening Center.
