Dr. Ian Smith Joins Cancer Research Foundation Of America's Board Of DirectorsCancer Research and Prevention Foundation Ian K. Smith, MD, a medical correspondent for NBC News, and a medical columnist for Time magazine and New York Daily News, has joined the Cancer Research Foundation of America's Board of Directors. The Cancer Research Foundation of America, a national nonprofit health organization located in Alexandria, VA, is pleased that Smith, a former Orthopaedic Surgery Intern at Albert Einstein College of Medical Hospitals and former attendee of University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine, Dartmouth Medical School, Columbia University and Harvard College, accepted the responsibility. "Dr. Smith will be a great asset to our Board," stated Carolyn Aldigé, president and founder of the Cancer Research Foundation of America. "His dedication and personal commitment to raising awareness of cancer prevention will enable the Foundation to reach new audiences, publics and constituencies - and save more lives." Smith was the 1998 recipient of the New York Association of Black Journalists "Best in Medical Broadcast" award and is the current Chapter Vice President at the Student National Medical Association. "The war against cancer is a gargantuan battle that all of us must be prepared to assume some of the responsibility, regardless of how little or much cancer has personally affected us," Smith says. "Joining an organization as effective and dedicated as the Cancer Research Foundation of America will allow me to better align my efforts in a task that has the potential to benefit all of mankind, now and forever." The Cancer Research Foundation of America's mission is the prevention of cancer through scientific research and education. Founded in 1985 by Aldigé, the organization's commitment to prevention is fueled by the fact that certain cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes, yet more than 550,000 Americans die from the diseases annually. Since its inception, the Foundation has supported research, education and early detection programs in excess of $50 million.
