Congress and the President cannot save Medicare and Medicaid unless and until they get Alzheimer's disease under control. This is the message that hundreds of families will deliver to their Senators and Representatives as they head here next week for the 15th Annual Alzheimer's Association's Public Policy Forum.

"You will not - you cannot - balance federal and state budgets if you let Alzheimer's disease continue on its present course," Sheldon Goldberg, CEO & president of the Alzheimer's Association, will warn Congress in his testimony Tuesday, April 1.

Today, more than 4 million Americans have Alzheimer's and another 20 million family members are impacted by its devastation. Within the next 10 years, as the first wave of baby boomers reach the age of greatest risk, Alzheimer's cases will begin to increase geometrically making this disease the public health crisis of the century. By 2050, the number of new cases will increase by nearly 1 million each year and overwhelm and bankrupt the nation's health care system if a cure or prevention is not found.

The Forum will focus on the urgent need to increase Alzheimer research funding, the need to modernize Medicare and how the aging population will strain medical resources and threaten the cost, quality and availability of health care.
