Charlton Heston demonstrated great strength and courage in announcing today that he may have Alzheimer's disease. His actions today have provided inspiration and support to the millions of families caring for people with Alzheimer's.

Today, there are more than 4 million Americans with Alzheimer's. However, by the middle of the century, that number is expected to swell to more than 14 million. For many, the process that will destroy their memories, their lives, and their savings has already begun.

The Alzheimer's Association is working tirelessly to ensure that this nation harnesses its resources-public and private-to conquer Alzheimer's disease, much as we have mobilized against cancer, heart disease, and AIDS. That's why we have urged Congress to increase federal funding of Alzheimer research to $1 billion.

We hope Mr. Heston and his family will find some comfort knowing they have helped advance awareness and understanding of Alzheimer's.
