Alzheimer's Association to Honor Congressman Edward J. MarkeyAlzheimer's Association Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-MA) will receive the Alzheimer's Association Humanitarian Award on Monday, April 2 at 12:00 p.m. in the Congressional and Senate rooms of the Capital Hilton Hotel, 16th and K Street NW. A leading voice in the Congress on finding a way to prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease, Markey was instrumental two years ago in creating a bipartisan Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer's disease with Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ). Markey has mobilized the House of Representatives to pass additional Alzheimer research funding at the National Institutes of Health, passed legislation that established an Alzheimer Clinical Research and Training Awards program at the National Institute of Aging and most recently helped pass a new Medicare homebound definition that will allow people with Alzheimer's to attend day care. Markey, whose mother suffered from the disease has been outspoken on the coming Alzheimer's epidemic and the urgent need to find solutions before the vast amount of babyboomers move into the age of highest risk.
