Leaders in Alzheimer research, treatment and care from around the globe will gather in Washington, D.C., for World Alzheimer Congress 2000. The goals of the meeting, scheduled for Sunday, July 9 through Tuesday, July 18, are to bring experts together, share the latest knowledge and identify strategies for eliminating Alzheimer's disease. Hosted by the Alzheimer's Association (U.S.A.), Alzheimer's Disease International and the Alzheimer Society of Canada, this will be the largest research, education and networking event dedicated solely to professionals working on Alzheimer's.

"Our hope is that World Alzheimer Congress 2000 will raise awareness of the latest research and caregiving issues associated with the disease and call attention to the need for more research in this country and abroad," said Edward Truschke, Alzheimer's Association president and CEO. "Our goal, which we share with millions of people with the disease, families and Alzheimer professionals across the globe, is to rid the world of this disease for our children, their children and the generations that follow."

To address the complex scientific and social aspects of Alzheimer's disease, World Alzheimer Congress 2000 is divided into three events:

Pivotal Research • July 9-13

Pivotal Research, which incorporates the 7th International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders, will feature the latest Alzheimer research, including updates on a potential Alzheimer vaccine, new therapeutics and advances in imaging. This body of knowledge will be disseminated through 1,200 oral and poster presentations and plenary sessions spanning the Pivotal Research event.

Bridging Research and Care • July 13-14

Bridging Research and Care will provide physicians and other health care professionals the most up-to-date scientific knowledge and information about diagnosing, treating and caring for people with Alzheimer's disease. Participants will learn what's new, practical and controversial in diagnosing Alzheimer's and discuss ways to communicate the diagnosis to people with the disease and their families.

Creative Care • July 15-18

Creative Care, which includes the 16th Alzheimer's Disease International, 9th National Alzheimer's Education and 22nd Alzheimer Society of Canada Conferences, will bring together an internationally recognized community of experts dedicated to caregiving issues. This portion of the congress will encourage professionals from different care settings to come together and learn from one another. Sessions are targeted to three specific audiences – professional caregivers, family caregivers and the staff of Alzheimer's associations around the globe.

The Alzheimer's Association (U.S.A.) assumed leadership of the world's largest international conference on Alzheimer's disease, World Alzheimer Congress 2000. Over a 10-day span, world leaders in Alzheimer research and care will unite in July 2000, marking the first time these Alzheimer specialists have come together for the vital purpose of sharing information on research and care to improve the lives of people affected by Alzheimer's disease. This unique gathering of scientists, healthcare professionals and other specialists is the collaborative effort of the Alzheimer's Association (U.S.A.), Alzheimer's Disease International, and Alzheimer Society of Canada.
