Mayo Clinic Announces January "Harmony for Mayo" ConcertsMayo Clinic Mayo Clinic today announces four January "Harmony for Mayo" concerts that will be held Mondays in locations throughout Mayo Clinic's campus and at a Rochester church. All "Harmony for Mayo" concerts are free and open to the public. Jan. 5: Mezzo-soprano Anne Adams, accompanied by pianist Kent McWilliams, will perform from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in Saint Marys Chapel, Saint Marys Hospital, first floor, Domitilla Building, 1216 Second St. S.W. Adams is an assistant professor of voice at St. Olaf College. An Oberlin College graduate who also earned a doctorate of musical arts in voice from the University of Michigan, Adams has performed with the Lyric Opera Cleveland and has sung in the chorus at the New York City Opera and Minnesota Opera. McWilliams, assistant professor of music at St. Olaf College, has studied and performed throughout Europe, Canada and the United States. He also performs chamber music with the Meridian Trio. Jan. 12: Pop vocalist Lisa Bailey, accompanied by pianist Jan Matson, will perform from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in Nathan Landow Atrium, subway level, Gonda Building, 100 Third Ave. S.W. Bailey is a Rochester native and works as a physical therapist at Saint Marys Hospital. She has sung at athletic events such as Minnesota Twins and University of Minnesota Gopher games. Matson is a graduate of Sherwood Music Conservatory in Chicago. A Rochester resident for 27 years, she is a versatile pianist and is affiliated with various chorales, soloists, schools, churches and theaters in southeastern Minnesota. Matson also spends time at Winona State University and St. Mary's University in Winona, and St. Catherine's College in St. Paul as a freelance staff accompanist. Jan. 19: The Twin Cities Community Gospel Choir will be featured in a concert commemorating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., at 7:30 p.m., at Christ United Methodist Church, 400 Fifth Avenue S.W. Directed by founder Robert Robinson since 1990, the choir performs "praise" music that ranges from inspirational spirituals to rocking contemporary gospel tunes. The choir is dedicated to promoting cross-cultural understanding through music and is known for its exuberant performances. Jan. 26: Cellist David Carter and pianist Lori Folland will perform from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in Nathan Landow Atrium, subway level, Gonda Building, 100 Third Ave. S.W. Their performance will include Phantasiestuecke, opus 73, by Robert Schumann and Suite for Solo Cello in C minor, by Bach. Carter, an associate professor of music at St. Olaf College, has performed as a soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Wichita Symphony and the Pueblo Symphony. He is founder and artistic director of the Bridge Chamber Music Festival, cello editor for String Notes magazine, cellist of the Melius Trio, and a faculty member at the Red Lodge Music Festival in Montana. Folland performs extensively in the Twin Cities area with musicians from the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Olaf College. Folland has also served as staff accompanist at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh and has performed in numerous chamber music series concerts throughout the United States. Harmony for Mayo, a music series for Mayo patients, visitors and staff, and the public, is sponsored by Mayo Clinic Center for Humanities in Medicine. The series is presented in cooperation with Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester, and is made possible by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Tomas Furth of Caracas, Venezuela, and New York City.
