Emory Healthcare Puts Its Heart Into American Heart Association Heart Walk: $427,400 Surpasses Fundraising Goal

Emory cardiologists and scientists are known throughout the world as leaders in researching and treating cardiovascular disease -- and on November 16, Emory Healthcare employees from all departments joined friends, families and patients to show they are committed to fighting the nation's number one killer, too.

Participating in the annual American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Walk at Turner Field, Emory Healthcare employees raised over $427,400 for the AHA. That makes Emory Healthcare number one in the Southeast and number two in the nation in raising funds to fight heart disease through the AHA Heart Walk.

One of the nation's fastest-growing walking events, each fall the non-competitive 5K Heart Walk and Run encourages companies to form teams of employees, family members and others. Team members raise money to fight heart disease and stroke by collecting donations from friends, neighbors and coworkers, then participate in the AHA Heart Walk.

"From the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience to the Emory Clinic, from the Department of Pediatrics to the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, employees throughout Emory put on their walking shoes and opened their wallets to make this year's AHA Heart Walk a success. In all, close to 2,000 Emory HealthCare employees raised almost $130,000 over our fundraising goal for this year's Heart Walk," notes Una Newman, Senior Director of Emory Healthcare Marketing.

John Fox, President and Chief Executive Officer of Emory Healthcare, led the Emory AHA Heart Walk team and personally raised $93,500 in sponsorship money. "The Emory community has a tradition of wholeheartedly and enthusiastically supporting this most worthwhile event. We are delighted that we continue to exceed our donation goals for the AHA Heart Walk each year. I am very proud and grateful for all the Emory volunteers that made this happen," Mr. Fox says. "Our Emory Healthcare family is united in supporting the American Heart Association in our common goal -- to defeat heart disease and stroke."
