Churches Recommit to Ending Hunger

On Sunday, October 24, hundreds of churches from many denominations across the country will come together under a common conviction: God's biblical imperative to end hunger. As part of the celebration of Bread for the World Sunday, churches will recommit themselves to advocate on behalf of hungry people.

Despite progress, more than 800 million people worldwide suffer from hunger. In the United States, 9.4 million people, including 3.3 million children, live in households that experience hunger.

"For 25 years, individuals and churches have been integral to Bread for the World's legislative victories for hungry people in the United States and around the world," said David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. "Bread for the World Sunday is a great opportunity to celebrate those victories and look forward to greater success in the years to come."

At Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish in New York City, the birthplace of Bread for the World, Beckmann will join BFW Founder Art Simon at a special worship service to commemorate Bread for the World Sunday. Following the service, Simon and Beckmann will sign copies of their new book Grace at the Table: Ending Hunger in God's World.

Bread for the World began in 1974 at Trinity Parish when a group of Christians, led by Simon, began to reflect on how to change U.S. policies that address hunger. Since its founding, Bread for the World has grown to include 44,000 members and 2,000 member churches.
