The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) today announced the appointment of Lynn Grefe to serve as its new chief executive officer.

Doug Bunnell, PhD and Catherine Mullally, NEDA Board president and co-president respectively, stated, "This is an exciting time for us as an organization. The issues surrounding eating disorders and their devastating impact have become a part of the public health discourse. With Lynn's leadership, our visibility will continue to grow, along with our ability to affect positive change for families and sufferers".

Lynn Grefe joins NEDA bringing more than 20 years of experience in the field of advocacy and communications. She has spent the past eight years in the field of reproductive health having served as national director of the Republican Pro-Choice Coalition, where she brought the organization to a broader, nationally recognized level. Her input was invaluable in effecting several pieces of legislation that became law in assisting women's health. Prior to that, she was the co-founder and president of International Civics Inc., a public affairs consulting firm that assisted corporations and non-profits in facing their challenging legislative and public policy issues. She currently serves on the Political Advisory Council of the American Cancer Society and served on the board of Family Planning Advocates of New York for a number of years. Grefe has addressed numerous audiences and held media appearances around the country.

"I am honored to take on this new challenge with NEDA to address the growing problem of eating disorders around the country. Recognizing that eating disorders have become so widespread, especially among our young people, only makes me more determined and energized to build awareness of the seriousness of this problem and ultimately help lead people toward solutions," said Grefe.

"Putting the crisis of eating disorders on the country's agenda is our first priority. At the same time, we hope to tackle the solutions knowing that millions of sufferers are waiting in the wings. Our work is vital and I look forward to having this opportunity to try to make a serious difference for people's lives, and there is nothing more important to me than that," Grefe concluded.

The first step on accomplishing that agenda is NEDA's October 2003 Conference Building Connections and Mobilizing Families, Educators, Advocates & Treatment Professionals, taking place in Chicago. For the first time the conference will specifically address the needs of families affected by eating disorders while continuing to serve health care providers, educators and advocates who work to prevent and treat these deadly illnesses. Families and friends are two of the largest groups that access NEDA's programs and services. Because of their personal investment in the issue, parents, families, and friends can and do make a difference.

The National Eating Disorders Association is the largest not-for-profit organization in the United States working to prevent eating disorders and provide treatment referrals to those suffering from anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder and those concerned with body image and weight issues. Headquartered in Seattle, Wash., NEDA sponsors a variety of programs and services, including a toll-free information and referral line (800-931-2237), website (www.nationaleatingdisorders.org ), distribution of educational brochures and information packets, school programs designed to teach children and teenage girls about positive body image and a Media Watchdog Program.
